The Beer Drop: Maplewood Brewery Juice Pants & Pulaski Pils

Two things I love about the beer industry:

  1. The beer. Duh.
  2. The melting pot of personalities, backgrounds, and motivations that, when combined, create a welcoming, friendly, highly-skilled, and collaborative industry that I feel honored to shed a bit more light on.

Enter Maplewood Brewery.

These guys knock both of the aforementioned departments out of the water. Beerwise, they churn out some of my all-time favorites, including juicy IPAs and Pale Ales, crisp Pilsners, and a Dark Saison that’ll knock your socks off. Personally, every interaction I’ve had with Maplewood–from craft beer festivals to sales tastings to inviting me over to the brewery (taproom opening soon!!) for the interview below–has proved them to be stellar ambassadors to the industry, and I think you’ll be seeing a lot more of them soon.

I caught up with Adam Smith, Brand Manager and Brewer for Maplewood, where we talked shop and this week’s Beer Drop, featuring Juice Pants and Pulaski Pils. Enjoy!

Say “I Do” with Foxtrot

Give the best. gift. ever. for any occasion! Our Concierge team is always available to guide you through our collection of readymade gifts, or design a completely custom gift for one person to one hundred. With summer (and wedding season) just around the corner, our gifting director, Ashley, is highlighting a few of her favorites for bridesmaids, groomsmen and guests!

As a wedding planner in a previous life and a recent bride myself, I know that the planning process can quickly become a burden of never-ending checklists and to-do’s, so I love that Foxtrot can help check a few things off that list with our bridesmaid, groomsman and ever-popular welcome gifts for guests. By getting to know each couple and the vision for their upcoming wedding, we’re able to make suggestions and create unique, one-of-a-kind gifts for their big day!

I love this custom bridesmaid’s gift because we were able to tie in the bride’s Charleston bachelorette to the theme of the gift – a gold pineapple tumbler for a touch of southern hospitality, and of course a Champagne Carry on Cocktail kit so they could get the celebrations started early – it was the perfect way to ask them to be part of her day.

Other great items I love for bridesmaids: Skeem Match Bottles, Rosebud Salve Tins, Ruza Rosé Cans and Fig+Yarrow Clay Rose Masks

It’s probably no surprise that groomsmen are typically considered a bit easier to buy for when it comes to gifts, but how many kitschy cufflinks or personalized flasks does one guy really need? I love this custom groomsman gift we put together with the groom’s favorite bourbon paired with an ice tray and cigar. The groom later sent me a picture their wedding photographer took of all of them enjoying their cigars that day!

Other great items I love for groomsmen: Daneson Bourbon & Single Malt Toothpicks, Baxter of California Clay Pomade, Mini FEW Bourbon and Old Fashioned Carry on Cocktail Kits

One request that we always see is for welcome gifts for guests hotel rooms, and with our extensive list of snacks and drinks (many of which are made in Chicago!), it’s fun and easy for couples to pick their favorites to welcome their guests to the Windy City. I usually recommend a mix of salty and sweet snacks with some essentials that guests can enjoy while traveling, however, one of my favorite gifts we did was a Bloody Mary package so guests could enjoy a little hair of the dog the morning after the wedding! The options are endless, and by complementing the gift with your wedding weekend itinerary or a personal welcome note, guests immediately know how grateful you are that they’re there to celebrate with you!

So stop stressing, brides (and grooms!). We’re here to help design the perfect gifts for your wedding and hand deliver them exactly where they need to go, so you have more time to enjoy your engagement and less to stress about.

Browse more of our Foxtrot gifts here, and if you’re looking to design a custom gift, reach out to myself and our Concierge team here. We can’t wait to work with you – happy gifting!

Henleys & Hops | The Beer Drop: Evil Twin Femme Fatale Yuzu Pale

This week on The Beer Drop, we’re proud to feature Evil Twin Brewing’s Femme Fatale Yuzu Pale, the brainchild of famed Danish brewer Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø. We’ve also added their Hipster Ale to our regular lineup, but were able to get our hands on a small amount of the Femme Fatale for you guys – this one will go quick!

Evil Twin has an outstanding reputation in the industry for focusing on the craft of brewing with little other funny business. As a gypsy brewery (a.k.a. they don’t own their own brewery, but instead rent space at different breweries around the world to brew their beers), this strategy has led to many diverse and off-the-beaten-path styles brewed worldwide with the who’s who of the industry.

Booch, Please

Rumor has it kombucha, that slightly fizzy, makes-your-gut-feel-tingly-but-in-a-good-way-drink, is amazing in cocktails. Clearly we needed to investigate further (trust but verify, guys), so we did a little R&D of our own – after an afternoon of shakin’, stirrin’ and plenty of sippin’, the verdict is in: it’s like kombucha was made to pair with alllll the booze.

Already a booch aficionado? Never touched the stuff? Whichever group you fall in, don’t pass up one of these cocktails – not only are they delicious, but we’re pretty sure you can drink more since they’re healthy, because probiotics. To get you started, here are our favorites we concocted with our lineup of Health-Ade Kombucha – cheers!

Henleys & Hops | The Beer Drop: Marz Lost Lake Exotica Ale

Close your eyes. (just figuratively you guys…you’ll need to use ’em to read ahead). Imagine you’re on a remote beach. Toes in the sand, clear blue water, one of those big striped umbrellas, the whole nine. Deep breath in. And out. Clear your mind. …do they make Hawaiian shirts in henley form? They should…*

Sorry, got distracted there. Back to the beach –

Now imagine you’re reaching to your side for a drink. Take a sip. Hmm. It’s not a mai tai, margarita or (gasp, hopheads) Corona, but something about it just works. What’s in your hand? The Marz Lost Lake Exotica Ale, this week’s feature in The Beer Drop!

I was eager to give this one a try because I’ve never really associated beer, especially one with a malt backbone, with a tropical setting. The brains behind Marz Community Brewing and the Tiki King Paul McGee of Lost Lake bet otherwise with this Maibock style ale, and totally pulled it off.

Henleys & Hops | The Beer Drop: Whiner Candy Darling

Alright here’s the skinny: Name’s Sean. I wore a henley shirt to work ONE TIME and just so happen to care about my Untappd check-in count more than I’d care to admit. Combine those happenstances, and you get Foxtrot’s new Henleys & Hops series. I don’t claim to be a beer expert by any means – I still enjoy a domestic light from time to time 😬 – but at Foxtrot I’ve been able to brush shoulders with folks who are doing some plain awesome things in the beer industry, and don’t want to keep those stories to myself.

So, come along for the ride as I meet the men and women behind the craft movement in Chicago and beyond – I also have the honor of introducing The Beer Drop, Foxtrot’s new weekly release of a limited, we’ve-got-it-till-it’s-gone beer.

In our first installment of The Beer Drop, we have the privilege of featuring Candy Darling, brewed by Whiner Beer out of Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood. They’re one of my favorite up and comers in the city right now, and feature a refreshing break from the monotonous churn of pale ales out there. I caught up with Brewmaster/Co-Founder Brian Taylor to chat Candy Darling, Whiner, his experience, and the industry at large:
